Week 1 - Power Rankings - "When I bought the Rolls Royce they thought it was leased Then I bought that new Ferrari, hater, rest in peace" - Meek Mill

With game 7 of the Stanley Cup on the horizon one can expect that this week’s games will be as intense as ever.   Also we had some rebellion and protesting of the league rules that occurred via email and I would not be surprised if a fight breaks out between the consumers and providers who clearly stand on opposite sides regarding the league bylaws.   With all of the extra energy and excitement, the league has named Phil Neururer as the head of security and president of player safety just in case things get out of hand.   Phil announced that fellow teammate Randy Gallatin has been named Sergeant of Arms (Phil's muscle for those of you who don't know what that means) who will carry out any punishments or suspensions that are handed out by the league

Alright, setting the politics and drama a side, on to the power rankings

  1. Team Royal Blue - They continue to hold the top spot on the power rankings after having a solid week going 3-1.  This roster is poised to run away with the league with all of the fire power in that lineup however will their goalie be able to keep the puck out of the net is a legitimate question.  He has consistently been one of the top goalies selected in the draft however stands fourth in the goalie stats after an average week.   Who leads the goaltending, well keep reading to find out.

  2. Team Green - After a very slow start to their season, the green team managed to pull out 3 wins last week.  The team’s captain, David Brown put the team on his back and led the team in scoring last week and they received great goaltending from none other than Justin Grant.  I am not a stat guy, however he has consistently gone later in the draft yet has lead his team to championships and leads the league in GAA.   Perhaps Captain Brown found the diamond in the rough as Justin Grant is like a fine wine, he only gets better as he ages.

  3. Team Black – With a surprising first week going 3-1 they are tied for the league lead in the standings department.   The question is will Captain TJ Belisle and Jake Bosben be able to carry the load for this team as they accounted for over 70% of the teams goals last week.   Needless to say, Jason Anderson and Mike Kopesky might as well have been on a milk carton as they were nearly MIA last week on the stat sheet.

  4. Team Gray – I like this team and although they were 2-2 on the week, they have a great lineup who is poised to move up in the standings.   The only issue I see here is that the team stats are backwards, as the leading scorer last week was Randy Gallatin who is a rock solid defensemen (just ask those who have faced down at Nokomis) and team Captain Dustin Postell went scoreless last week.   It seemed as though he was reminiscing back to Rochester 2019 where he was a face-off specialist only, however this will not help them in the Greasy Mitts league format as there are no face-offs.

  5. Team Red – Team red managed to pull out only one win last week and perhaps this is a result of a few factors.   First long-time veteran Luke Volk is questionable for tonight’s match-ups as it is believed he may be protesting the league and its Board of Directors decisions regarding team beer rules. Keep an eye on your coolers as he may be trying to revive the Boston Tea Party by dumping out beer into the drainage ditches around the Super Rink yelling “No taxation without representation”!   Second, long time veteran of the league Josh Brand is recovering from a concussion he gave himself on Monday night as he whiffed on a pass in his own zone and then proceeded to stumble and land on his head when he tried to recover from the blunder.   Hopefully he can return to his winning ways but there are definitely questions surrounding this team.

  6. Team Baby Blue – Despite not getting a win last week and only scoring 3 goals, the managed to still get the last spot in the power rankings.   With 3 former college hockey players, the best body in hockey, and Benik who once lead the league in goal tending for the season, they just need to find an identity and perhaps take some notes from John “no shot is a bad shot” Haider, in finding their identity.   While the first week was dismal, I would guess they will try and right size the ship this week and get at least 2 wins.

Should be a good week given it is game 7 of the Stanley Cup and perhaps each of these teams can find some inspiration as we all know that the Greasy Mitts Cup is what it is all about.
