Power Rankings Week 1: 'I'm in love with the coco (coco, coco)' - O.T GENASIS

Greasy Mitts 2020-21 winter season has begun!  Now that the election is over and vaccines are on the way, I am hopefully things will settle down and we can get back to some sense of normalcy.  It has been a challenging start to the season with a number of teams having to burn up their subs early, so it will be interesting to see how the captains did drafting when they actually have to play with the players they drafted and not some of the fill in studs we saw week one.

Anyways, I would like to send out a huge thank you to a Greasy Mitts OG for stepping up and assisting the Commish with the draft process when someone who shall remain nameless, decided last minute to bail due to his wife who wears the pants in that relationship.   He has been a staple in this league and is like a fine wine, only gets better with age (except for his slow feet and terrible shootout moves)!  Additionally, another shout out goes to Kogs who despite bailing on almost all board responsibilities including the GM summer golf event, beers with the boys, and draft was able to grace us with his presence week one.   Funny enough he was the only one from his team who showed up week one, however I would have done the same if I picked up the two subs he did as anyone could win with those two subs.

Now on to the power rankings and post draft reactions.

Taking the 6th spot in the power rankings is team black who is captained by none other than Matty S.  The early season expectations were high as he was able to field a team that included a GM season goal scoring leader with several cups in the draft era, one of the top goalies, a guy who still is at the top of the leader board on almost all TG statistics, and the best looking GM member and also male model, however they could not even pull out one win.   Perhaps it was the lackluster offense to blame as they only scored 3 goals in 4 games who knows but look for this team to rebound in week two.

Coming in at number 5 this week, is team royal who managed to go 2-2 last week.  This is the same team I mentioned above who was missing two drafted players and picked up two young studs to “fill in” week one.   Perhaps it was the karma that got them as they disobeyed the gentlemen’s agreement to pick up comparable subs and opted to go with the best free agents on the market or was it was due to the fact that they were like a ship without a captain.  Despite sitting tied for third the league has no idea how this team will do when they have their entire team present and for that I have given them the solid 5 spot in the power rankings.

On to number 4 this week, I am giving this to team orange, who also went 2-2 week one.   This team is built on strong defense with two of the best the league has ever seen, however do they have enough scoring power to climb the standings is yet to be determined.   I spoke with Bob McKenzie and while he likes the combination of team toughness, skill, and goaltending the team needs Fosters Flop Cop to step it up on the stats sheet and with lots of pucks in the back of the net.

With the coveted 3rd spot in the power rankings, I must hand this out to team yellow.   Despite being the best team in the league last week with four wins, Kathryn  Tappen thinks that the burden is too much to bear for the number one draft pick and south paw goalie.   They carried the team last week and if they want to get the number one spot in the power rankings like they hold in the standings, they need more from their captain, OG Mikey and FNG Quickie to gain the respect of the power rankings committee.  Get it going boys, but congrats on the good first week.

Number 2 on the power rankings goes to team baby blue.  This team has tons of league experience with young talent and great defense and with a 3-1 record last week they have earned the right to say they are the second best team on the power rankings.  Look for more out of their Captain and TJ next week as they make a hard push to go 4-0 and take over the number one spot on the power rankings.

Finally, I have saved the best for last.  With the number one spot in the power rankings this week (drum roll please), this goes to team green who managed to go 1-3 last week.   Perhaps you are thinking that I am sitting at home drinking a Moscow mule or perhaps had a little too much of grandpa’s cough medicine, but no I said it, the team who only got one win is the best team.   Why you ask, well here you go in bullet point form below:

  • Their captain loves the squirters and was named co-rookie of the year when he came into the league.

  • Mr. Way is on the mend and look for big things out of this big guy. With silky hands and size, he will be one of the top scorers this season.

  • Bobby T. all the way from the jersey shore will light up the room with his stories and light up the goalies with his twisted wrister.

  • Joey H. is a mover and shaker and now that he has found love (again), he will dazzle the league with his hands and his smile.

  • Goaltending is a must in this league and theirs can still get it done. He was the winner of the cup in the inaugural season and is looking to repeat the task some 10 years later which has never been done yet.

That’s it for this week’s rankings and please remember two things, if you and/or someone in your house has a pending test or is positive, you must stay home as we need this league to stay on the ice.   Hell, just do what Kogs did and go grab some ex NHL’ers to fill in as it worked out so well for team royal.   Take care, stay safe and healthy, and may all your dreams be greasy.
